It's been my personal experience born, bred, married, given birth and divorced in CA; your ex can't extort $500 dollars a month from you when child support was never originally ordered in your divorce papers. Also, I understand that the state of residence where the person that filed for the divorce is where jurisdiction lies. Hopefully you will do the right thing and send whatever per month that you can.
