Frustrated in Colorado

by T.J.C.
(Fountain, CO. 80817)

My fourth child turned 18 years old nine months ago. I have not seen him in over a year. He has not been to school since the third quarter of his freshman year.My child support payments are based on bonuses I no longer receive and my ex-wife refuses to make any accommodations for me to have a visit.

Our local Child Support Enforcement Agency has been no help, even though I was the one who set up payments through them. I have not missed any payments. My complaints are not isolated, it's happening to more fathers and there are no laws to protect us.

I was not told when each "child" moved out of the custodial home my estimatad over payments for the first three "children" total over $4000. CSE refused to help or even look into the matter.
With my remaining son the frustration just mounts. One month after he turned 18 I took a pay-cut from my job that I've held for 15 years.
I'm forced to follow the laws, but the ex-wife does not have to enforce my sons' education, a reasonable visitation and be truthful about where my kids live.

The system is broken, with no forseeable change in sight. The most insulting issue in my situation: Colorado Child Support Enforcement told me that I have to pay until each child turns 19 no matter where they live. Unbelievable!

Colorado CSE
by: Anonymous

In Colorado, emanicpation is at age 19 unless they are disabled, married, or join the military. CSE is the agency that collects and records the child support. If you want a modification, then you must request it from the court. CSE is not a legal entity with decision making powers.

At the colorado courts website are child support calculators that you can use to assist in calculation of child support.

Also, if your son is 18, he can decide if he wants visitation as he is a legal adult.
