Was a father now a dead beat dad

by Steve
(Del Rio Texas)

When I was in high school I got my girlfriend pregnant. We had our oldest son and we lived together off and on for a year then we had a second child. We were still not married. We split up and never got back together. I didn't know she had gone and filed child support on me when our first son was born. At the time I was supporting her and my son. When we split up finally, I would give her money out of my check to help with the boys. Then I got in trouble with the law, went to jail for a year then I was out and child support started again for 6 years. I moved out of town for a better job and they hit me with a ton of child support. They were garnishing my wages even when I never went to court. No luck! When they had turned 18, they went to get their driver license and found out that on the birth certificate the father is unknown. The boys don't even have my last name legally. Now they're in there 20's and I am still trying to pay off the back child support. There's nothing I can do.

You're absolutely right, you will now owe arrearages until you're paid up. It's really best that you make timely payments now because if you file for social security 65% of that will be garnished and sent to your ex. If you pass over in to the next realm, regardless of any will, anything in your physical possession will be sold off to fulfill the obligation. And let's not forget the IRS, they'll get their piece of your pie too plus penalties. The law takes this very seriously. You didn't fulfill your moral, financial and legal obligations in a timely, acceptable way. Fatherhood is a serious, life long career.
